YouTube and Tiktok are both video-sharing platforms. While on the one hand, YouTube has got more than two billion monthly active users; on the other hand, we have Tiktok, which has over 800 million monthly active users.
Key Difference Between YouTube and TikTok
Both are video sharing platforms, the type of videos both the platforms allow is a little different, and both the platforms work differently with a different set of the user base.
On YouTube, you will find videos that can be one minute in duration or can be a 1-hour long film, but on TikTok, the video duration is just under 1 minute.
Another significant difference is, TikTok is a mobile-first platform, which means it is only available on mobile. However, it gives the creators an option to upload videos from computers as well.
Since it’s a Mobile-first platform, it majorly supports videos in vertical format (portrait format). In contrast, YouTube supports both portrait and landscape, although 99.9% of the videos you find on YouTube are in landscape mode.
Which one is the best for creators?
There isn’t a lot compare between the two platforms, because both cater to different audiences, and even the format of the videos is different for both the platforms.
To make a fair comparison, I installed TikTok on my mobile phone and used it extensively for two months.
I initially had high hopes with the Tiktok platforms after reading a lot about its user base and how it has the highest engagement rate among all the other mobile-first social media apps.
And I thought it is easy to capitalize on the vast user base, which is growing day by day on it, but it is not as easy as it sounds. While the engagement rate on Tiktok might be high, the call to action on the videos on it is lower in comparison to YouTube.
On TikTok, the videos are between 15 seconds to 1 minute long, and people keep scrolling to find new videos. So, a lot of people would not be taking action on your video. You will be getting a lot of views, but the percentage of people taking action would be much lower.
If you are someone who doesn’t want the users to take any action on the video and want them to enjoy and move on, then perhaps TikTok is the best medium for you to get your audience.
But, if you are someone who wants the user to take any action, perhaps engage with the video by writing down comments, or if you want to create videos that are longer than 1 minute.
Maybe your story requires you to create videos in landscape mode. Then YouTube would undoubtedly be the best platform for creators.
On Which Platform It’s Easy to Create Content
Since the duration of videos on TikTok is short, and people majorly do everything from recording their videos to editing and uploading them from their mobile, it’s easier to create content on TikTok in comparison to YouTube.
On YouTube, you will find high-quality videos shot using high-end cameras, videos edited on high-end computers, the basic structure of videos on YouTube could be as complex as a movie. However, not all the videos on YouTube are shot using high-end cameras.
With mobile phones improving their camera features, more people are using it to shoot videos.
TikTok videos might be short clips, and easier to make, TikTokers have to keep their frequency of uploads high. Popular creators on TikTok post somewhere between 2 to 5 videos every day.
On YouTube, the average frequency of uploads by a creator can be 2 to 3 videos in a week. It’s partly because of the complexity of the videos and lack of ideas for topics to cover.
Whereas, the majority of the content on TikTok is based on the current trends that are going on. These videos include taking up challenges, doing lip-syncing on a popular song, or dialogue, or creating funny short clips.
Tiktok does want to compete with YouTube and the other video sharing sites, and this is why it is trying to broaden their category by encouraging its creators to create educational content as well. Still, currently, YouTube is the best place to find informative content.
The biggest challenge for TikTok to give fierce competition to YouTube is its most prominent feature, that is, the duration of its videos.
TikTok videos are popular because they are short and can be easily consumed by anyone who is getting bored and wants to browse on their smartphones casually.
Users can watch one video or keep swiping to find new videos to entertain themselves.
Which One is Easier to Get Started On?
It is easy to get started on TikTok, because, all you want is a mobile phone and perhaps a tripod so that you can record yourself doing stuff that you want to post.
The Tiktok mobile app, which is available for both iOS and Android, offers everything you would want to create the video in the TikTok app itself.
It is a kind of mini video editor where you can join multiple clips, add sound effects, filters to the videos, add transitions, and then finally upload the video.
While on the other hand, if you want to upload your video on YouTube, you would require a video editing software to edit your videos, and then you would need a computer to upload the video.
All of it can also be done on a mobile phone, and people do use their mobile phones, but posting videos on YouTube would require you to edit videos in a third-party video editing app.
If you have got an Android mobile, there are plenty of video editing apps you can choose from, and then you can use your mobile to upload the videos, but the experience is not as seamless as it is on a computer.
Perhaps, this is the reason TikTok also allows creators to upload the video on their platform from Desktop.
Some YouTubers have their presence on TikTok, and some TikTok users have made their presence on YouTube as well.
So, you don’t need to use only one platform. You can use both of them, but one has to be your primary, and YouTube has all the qualities to be your primary platform for sharing videos.
